Capacity Grant Update: Brooklyn Christian Church Food Pantry
The Brooklyn Christian Church Food Pantry would like to extend their gratitude to the Community Foundation of Morgan County (“Foundation”). It was by God’s grace that we were granted a $2,000 gift from the Foundation’s Capacity Grant Program to upgrade and expand our refrigeration capacity. The Brooklyn Christian Church opened its doors to house the food pantry in the early 80s. Thus, we have housed the pantry and served our community for over 40 years. We also open our doors to families that may have been in a house fire or some other natural disaster for food, shelter, and clothing, which we experience a couple times each year. We have been working to upgrade our food pantry. Last year we purchased and installed new flooring and replaced one of our two freezers that malfunctioned. We were not expecting to replace our refrigerator anytime soon, but with it starting to fail, we had to find a replacement. The additional refrigeration capacity this grant provides will allow us to carry more fresh foods for the families we serve. Moreover, as a member of the Gleaners Food Bank program, we are required to take a certain amount of fresh produce from their facility to continue to receive such benefits. Unfortunately, the distribution of produce was so great that we could not hold all of it in our two refrigerators. Thus, food would perish and be wasted before we could get into the hands of the people we serve. However, our new commercial size refrigerator will now allow us to refrigerate all of the produce, which will cause it to last longer. We also believe this additional refrigeration will give us the capacity needed to start offering dairy products too. The Foundation’s generosity is certainly helping us in our mission to let no one go hungry. Currently, we provide essential foods to approximately 15 families per month and we serve more than 40 families over the Christmas holidays. The extra refrigeration will also come in handy during our community dinners that we serve the third Friday of each month in fellowship hall of our Church. The Brooklyn Christian Church Food Pantry is open the first Tuesday and third Saturday every month from 9 am to 11 am. We encourage anyone in the Brooklyn and surrounding area to contact us if you are in need of food as mentioned before it is our mission to let no one go hungry.
