Have you been to the STEM Academy? It is an amazing place where learning takes a hands-on approach. Students learn with iPads while sitting on bouncing balls. This new way to teach is already having amazing results. With a community garden, the school and it’s Brooklyn community work together. Classes learn how to care for nature while the community helps nurture the students’ academic accomplishments. The production from the garden is given to students who get a “taste” of what they seeded.

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Inc.

$7,000

What would you do if there was no food in your pantry? Like many of us, we would go to the local store and refill our shelves. Unfortunately, in our rural county, many of our minimum-wage working community members cannot make ends meet after paying rent and utilities so they find their finances short in being able to stock up on the basic essentials to feed a family. Food issues are common in our county and the pantry helps families get by with a hand up, not a handout.

$6,400

Smith Elementary is now the first art academy in Morgan County. Kids learn math, science and reading through a lens of fun in the arts. Learning cannot be confused with play time as students practice their lessons while listening to Mozart. The academy is a wonderful
way to introduce our young people to the power of the arts for the rest of their lives.

Bridging the Wireless Access Gap

$1,700

to be left behind simply because of where they live.

MSD of Martinsville DARE Program

For years, we have asked our kids to “stay off drugs”. However, programs that support these efforts have decreased with funding. It is important for our children to realize that saying “no” is what the majority of us do and it is cool to skip drugs and alcohol for better choices in life. We can teach them that peer pressure is really all about standing up for what is good in our community, and their future.

The fund, which is a nonpermanent fund, provides support for the Barbara B. Jordan YMCA in Martinsville. The foundation will work closely with the YMCA to keep abreast of their needs.

Purpose: To provide support and sustain the operations of the Barbara B. Jordan YMCA and its programs.

History: Founded in 1961, the Morgan County YMCA grew out of the interest of the Jaycees and a group of local businessmen. This initiative followed an Indiana University research study that determined that there was a strong need for social and recreational opportunities, especially for area teens. William Schwab donated the first Y building, a former grocery store, which was moved to the top of Cunningham Hill in Martinsville. In 1968 the Board of Directors embarked on a $450,000 fund drive to construct a new building at its present 5 ½ acre site on East Morgan Street. The building was dedicated as the YMCA for Morgan County in 1970. In 1974 the building was renamed in honor of Barbara Byram Jordan, a former volunteer instructor whose family was influential in establishing the Y. By 1979 the need for expansion was evident. The Board again launched a fund drive to add a fitness center, racquetball courts, and an indoor running track. In 1982 the Kendall Fitness center was dedicated in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Wilbur Kendall. A renovation in 2010 eliminated the racquetball courts and added a separate free weight area and an aerobics studio for group fitness classes. From the initial programming for teens, the Y has expanded to offer a wide range of healthy program options for all ages. Included are Aquatics, Day Camping, Fitness, Preschool, School Age Child Care, Youth & Adult Sports, Senior Programs, and (of course) Teen Programs.

To help raise funds for children in orphanages in Myanmar.

Purpose: The Chin State Orphanage Mission Fund has been established to fund a religious mission to improve the lives of children who live in orphanages in the Chin State of Burma, also known as Myanmar, in Southeastern Asia. The fund has been established by concerned local citizens in order for donors in and around Morgan County, Indiana to improve the lives and safety of the children living in these orphanages.

The Chin State Mission Fund supports 7 Christian house orphanages in Chin State and the border area of Kalaymio in Myanmar. These orphanages are supported by providing orphans with bags of rice, mosquito bed nets and occasionally other necessities. Funds are sent to each orphanage 3-4 times a year to purchase the many bags of rice needed to feed the children.

These orphanages are not state-funded and have no outside help. Consequently, this fund was started in 2013 in an effort to support these children. Initially, aid went to one orphanage, but with the help of donors on this page seven orphanages now receive the food and necessities needed for a better quality of life, which includes enough rice for three daily meals and mosquito netting for each child’s bed. The number of children this fund feeds has risen from 23 children in 2013 to nearly 100 children presently. Photographs are taken at each orphanage after they receive their rice bags, and added to the Chin State Orphanages Fund Facebook Page to show donors where the money is being used.

Currently, all seven of our orphanages have been given mosquito netting for every child and 3 meals of rice a day. In this region, before this committee, these children only received two meals a day of rice and a few vegetables. Additionally, the orphanages could not afford mosquito netting to cover the children while sleeping. Most children slept on the floor, as beds are too expensive. The Asian Tiger Mosquito causes the death of millions each year from the spread of many diseases. Now, these children are protected at night as they sleep.

Instruments used there during the 1950-80’s include a photographic camera, photoelectric photometer, scanning spectrometer, and slit spectrograph. Topics studied include galactic clusters, cool star spectrophotometry, and spectroscopy of interacting binary stars.

Purpose:

To provide funds for the purchase of TUC, tracked utility carriers, for service-connected disabled veterans who qualify and have expressed interest in receiving a TUC.

The Tracks4Vets program was established to make it easier for willing sponsors to connect with the veterans that have expressed interest in receiving a TUC, Tracked Utility Carrier to help them get back to living a more active lifestyle.

History:

The TUC (tracked utility carrier) provides freedom and flexibility to Service-Connected Disabled Veterans. The TUC was designed for “utility” as well as mobility. Ring-Co, the creators of the TUC, believe that providing this newfound ability will be instrumental in saving lives by getting Veterans out from behind walls and active outdoors again.

There’s no better way to say thank you to a veteran than giving them back their own freedom.

The TUC is the solution for the veterans that suffer from bodily injuries sustained during service. This tracked utility carrier was born from strong belief, compassionate ingenuity, and a carefully balanced mix of desperation and hope. As an all-terrain carrier vehicle, it is designed to transport its rider over dirt, sand, grass, mud, snow, and more. But it goes beyond getting someone from Point A to Point B. The TUC is truly focused on utility and re-abilitating its user. With various features like towing power for pushing and pulling tool attachments, 23 HP air-cooled gasoline engine, extended battery life, and its patented Quick-Attach System, the TUC becomes more than a chair – it becomes a tool. This vehicle helps complete seemingly mundane tasks, like mowing the yard or plowing snow, that veterans may have deemed impossible after being wounded. Not only does it help them complete everyday chores, but it can also aid with recreational hobbies and interests. No longer will a veteran have to miss a fishing trip or a family hike because they’re not able to keep up; the TUC can comfortably support its rider as they take on familiar activities and new adventures.

A TUC with standard features costs $24,900. Our goal is to raise the funds to purchase TUCs for 20 service-disabled veterans who have expressed the interest in receiving a TUC.

He also wanted to t honor the good work of the teachers and the board of the Weekday Religious Education program of Morgan County.

The Barbara B. Jordan YMCA celebrated its 50th Anniversary at a community dinner in May 2012, at which time those in attendance were challenged to help start a new endowment fund for the growth and operation of the organization
