History: Mooresville has a long history of honoring its hometown veterans. The first being the Community Honor Roll which honored area citizens who had served in the military. In 1948, the Mooresville Veterans Memorial was erect to honor the 29 Mooresville area veterans who lost their lives during World War I and II. In 1976, the community and veterans group banded together again to add to the memorial. The 1976 addition added the names of those lost in Korea and Vietnam. Another addition was made to the memorial in 2008 when fundraisers added a monument to Sammy L. Davis, a 1966 Mooresville graduate who received the Medal of Honor for heroism in Vietnam and the addition of a marker for a Mooresville soldier lost in Operation Desert Storm. In 2011, Mooresville lost two more soldiers in the line of duty. Two new black marble makers were added to the memorial. The memorial area continues to be a living memorial, as families may purchase bricks to honor their veterans or in support of all veterans.
